Steam Deck (Valve) Review: A Powerful Handheld Gaming PC

Steam Deck (Valve) Review: A Powerful Handheld Gaming PC

Overview

The Steam Deck is Valve's first handheld gaming PC, designed to bring the Steam library to a portable form factor. Powered by a custom AMD APU (Zen 2 CPU + RDNA 2 GPU) with 16GB LPDDR5 RAM, it can run modern AAA games at 30-60 fps on its 7-inch 1280x800 LCD touchscreen. The device runs SteamOS, a Linux-based operating system optimized for gaming, but also supports Windows installation. With active cooling, dual stereo speakers, and a 40 Wh battery, it's a versatile device for on-the-go gaming.

Key Specs Highlights

  • Processor: AMD Aerith/Van Gogh (Zen 2, 4 cores/8 threads, 2.4-3.5 GHz)
  • GPU: AMD RDNA 2 (8 CU, 1.0-1.6 GHz)
  • Memory: 16 GB LPDDR5
  • Storage: 64 GB eMMC or 256/512 GB NVMe SSD (user-replaceable), plus MicroSD expansion
  • Display: 7.0-inch LCD, 1280x800, 60Hz, 400 nits, 16:10 aspect ratio, touchscreen
  • Battery: 40 Wh (estimated 2-8 hours depending on usage)
  • Connectivity: WiFi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C (video out, audio, charging), 3.5mm headphone jack
  • Weight: 674 grams
  • Dimensions: 298 x 117 x 49 mm

Who It Is For

The Steam Deck is ideal for PC gamers who want to play their Steam library portably, especially those who enjoy indie games, older titles, and emulation (PSP, GameCube, Wii, PS2 mostly playable; some Switch games). It's also great for tinkerers who appreciate the open nature of SteamOS and the ability to replace the SSD. However, its size and weight (674g) may be less comfortable for long sessions compared to smaller handhelds.

Buying Notes

As of 2025, the Steam Deck is available directly from Valve in three storage configurations: $399 (64 GB eMMC), $529 (256 GB SSD), and $649 (512 GB SSD). The 64 GB model is slower but can be upgraded. The 512 GB model includes an anti-glare screen. Note that the original LCD model has been succeeded by the Steam Deck OLED, but the LCD version remains a capable and more affordable option. Check Valve's website for current availability and pricing.
