ASUS ROG Ally X Review: Specs, Performance, and Buying Guide

Overview

The ASUS ROG Ally X is a refined version of the original ROG Ally, designed for serious handheld gaming. It packs an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor (8 cores, 16 threads, up to 5.1 GHz) and Radeon 780M graphics (2.7 GHz), paired with 24GB LPDDR5X RAM and a 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD. The 7-inch 1080p IPS touchscreen runs at 120Hz, and the 80Wh battery offers extended play sessions. Windows 11 provides full PC game compatibility, while dual fans and heat pipes keep thermals in check.

Key Specs Highlights

  • Processor: AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme (Zen 4, 8C/16T, 3.3-5.1 GHz)
  • Graphics: AMD Radeon 780M (2.7 GHz)
  • Memory: 24 GB LPDDR5X
  • Storage: 1TB M.2 2280 NVMe SSD + MicroSD slot
  • Display: 7.0-inch IPS touchscreen, 1920x1080, 120Hz
  • Battery: 80 Wh
  • Weight: 678 grams
  • Connectivity: WiFi 6E, Bluetooth, USB-C video out, 3.5mm audio jack
  • Sensors: Fingerprint reader, gyroscope, microphone, Hall effect triggers and joysticks

  • OS: Windows 11

Who It Is For

The ROG Ally X is ideal for PC gamers who want a portable device capable of running modern AAA titles and emulators (up to PS2, GameCube, Wii, 3DS) smoothly. It suits users who prefer Windows over SteamOS for broader game library access, and those who value a high-refresh-rate screen and long battery life. The 678g weight and plastic build make it relatively light for its class, though some may prefer a more premium feel.

Buying Notes

Priced at $799 USD (launch), the ROG Ally X competes with devices like the Steam Deck OLED and Lenovo Legion Go. Its 24GB RAM and 80Wh battery are standout upgrades over the original Ally. However, the plastic shell and lack of OLED display may be drawbacks for some. Ensure you have a USB-C charger (not included) for fast charging. The MicroSD slot is useful for expanding storage, but the internal SSD is user-replaceable. Check for current pricing and availability, as discounts may appear.
